The International Maritime Organization (IMO), as the specialized agency of the United Nations in the field of maritime transport, has taken extensive measures to protect the marine environment. Through the ratification and implementation of various conventions such as MARPOL, BWM and AFS, the organization has set standards to reduce pollution from oil, chemicals and plastics in the seas. IMO has also moved towards a more sustainable and low-carbon maritime transport by developing new requirements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase fuel efficiency. These measures have significantly reduced marine pollution and protected marine ecosystems globally. The research findings show that IMO has had many positive impacts on the marine environment by strengthening international cooperation and using new technologies, especially in the field of monitoring and managing ship waste. However, challenges such as political differences between member states, resource constraints and implementation problems still exist. As a key institution in the global arena, IMO continues to develop innovative solutions and will continue to play a vital role in reducing marine pollution and preserving marine ecosystems. This article attempts to examine the role of the International Maritime Organization in protecting the marine environment using a descriptive-analytical method.
