Violence has a long history, and a look at the history of sexual assault in war shows that gender-based violence in war is as old as war itself. Gender-based violence was considered socially acceptable behavior in the rules of war and conflict in centuries BC and in Greek civilization. Violation of individual dignity is considered the worst consequence of war, and its psychological, physical, and social scars remain with them for the rest of their lives. Throughout history, among those involved in war or even those who have not been present in the conflict, it has always been women who have been victims of sexual violence by soldiers. Sometimes this has happened accidentally and sporadically, during military occupation by soldiers, against the inhabitants of the occupied area or against female prisoners, and sometimes it has been done systematically as a tool and method of war for the purpose of ethnic cleansing and generational change.Violence against women is a specialized term used, like hate crime, to describe acts of violence against women in general. This form of violence is perpetrated against a specific group of people and the gender of the victim is the main basis of the violence. The United Nations General Assembly defines violence against women as “any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women,” including “threats of coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life.” The 1993 Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women states that this violence can be perpetrated by individuals of the same sex, by private individuals, by family members, and by States.
