The knowledge of the unseen of the Imams (peace be upon them) is one of the fundamental issues in Shiite theology that has always attracted the attention of theologians and commentators. The Imamate is the continuation of the responsibilities of the Prophet (peace be upon him) (except for receiving legislative revelation); therefore, the Imam must have access to the knowledge of the Prophet (peace be upon him) - including the knowledge of the unseen - in order to be able to guide the society in the absence of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Therefore, the Imam, as a guide, must be aware of all the paths that lead to guidance, and one of those paths is having the knowledge of the unseen.
As a religious authority, the Imam must be able to make decisions based on knowledge of hidden realities (such as the intentions of individuals, future events, and the interests of society). This intellectual need requires having knowledge beyond ordinary knowledge.
This research aims to examine the reasons and foundations of the knowledge of the unseen of the Imam (peace be upon him), with emphasis on the Holy Quran.The research method is analytical-descriptive and interpretive, using Quranic sources. The results show that despite the Quran’s clarification that the knowledge of the unseen is reserved for God Almighty, “The Knower of the unseen, so He does not reveal anyone about His unseen except to whom He is pleased from among His messengers” (Jinn/26-27), there is a possibility of imparting this knowledge to the chosen servants, including the prophets and divine saints. In light of this Quranic principle, the Imam’s knowledge of the unseen is explained not in the sense of independence in knowledge, but as divine knowledge that is imparted and instructive.
